About Philipp Von Der Wippel
The British exit would represent the first incidence of a member state deciding to leave the European Union. It has never happened before that a country turns its back on the European project. It is not only the case that the option of opting out is not incorporated into the European institutions, but it is also core of the European self-understanding to resolve diverging interests in the course of consensus rather than separation. Quitting the British membership in the EU would partly represent the surrender of togetherness diminishing the promise of the post-war period to face each other in Europe, instead of turning away among each other. Therefore, I am convinced that leaving the EU is the wrong mean to a justified end: Whereas I approve the existing necessity of reforms with regard to European institutions, I strictly disagree with the idea of solving this institutional dissatisfaction by forsaking the entire concept of increasing interconnectedness. The European idea itself has to be protected, but the structures and institutions of its execution have to be scrutinized by its members. That is why Europe is in urgent need of starting a new discourse about how to implement the European project in the future. But since the potential Brexit is not questioning the implementation but the core idea itself, leaving the EU is not the appropriate mean to achieve the goal of the British voters. "
